The first such processes to be farmed out are ‘horizontal’ financial and human resources activities, where BPO suppliers have seen clear opportunities. In the HR area in particular, new ‘pure-play’ BPO players, such as Exult and Xchanging, have struck breathtaking deals which have acted as a wake-up call to other would-be BPO suppliers.
“Exult took a market – HR – which had become fragmented in every country and appeared to have no value. It invested in technology that made HR processes available to staff on a self-service basis, which not only offered them a better service but at the same time allowed the company to collect valuable information to use in other HR initiatives,” points out Robert Morgan, chief executive of outsourcing consultancy Morgan Chambers.
